Introduction
‘The strategy board’ provides a map of the whole of humankind, and a map of the spiritual journeys we make. It can show us where we are, and where we have been, and where we might go. It can help us to understand ourselves and other people. It can show us the best routes away from danger, and toward our natural spiritual gifts.
The strategy board is built on the familiar concepts of ‘head’ and ‘heart’ – ‘head’ for logic and reason, and ‘heart’ for emotions and dreams – plus ‘gut,’ as in ‘gut reaction,’ for instinct and intuition.
Each of us has just one of these three as our primary influence, guiding us through the complexity of the day: we are head types, or heart types, or gut types.
As well as the primary influence, some – but not all – have another of the three as an ever-present secondary influence. This moves ‘home base’ on the strategy board from the center of a ‘zone’ over toward that secondary influence – creating a pattern of nine ‘home bases’: the pattern of the nine types. Each home base or ‘sector’ has its own distinctive strategy for approaching the world.
We also change – across the years or just through the day – making moves across the board, often following well-trodden paths. But the most important journey of all is to be made within the home base sector – from the ‘corrupt’ form of the type to its ‘redeemed’ form, from the fallen-ness of the type to its natural spiritual gifts and its unique and vital contribution to the whole body of Christ.
